A St. Louis-based team of plant and physician-scientists with a vision of eradicating malnutrition throughout the developing world today announced the formation of the Global Harvest Alliance (GHA), a humanitarian effort involving St. Louis Children's Hospital, The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and the School of Medicine. Through a shared commonality of purpose, each institution brings unique strengths and leadership within their respective fields to bear on this global challenge.

Warner receives professorship named for Washington University's first female surgeon

Brad W. Warner, a pediatric surgeon whose research and surgical career have focused on improving the lives of children with congenital bowel problems, has been named the Jessie L. Ternberg, M.D., Ph.D., Distinguished Professor in Pediatric Surgery at the School of Medicine.

Kelle Moley named James Crane Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Kelle H. Moley, a world-renowned reproductive biologist, has been named the first James P. Crane Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the School of Medicine. Moley, vice chair for basic science research and director of the Division of Basic Science Research in obstetrics and gynecology, was installed in the new professorship at a ceremony June 10.

Heuckeroth receives Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research

Robert Heuckeroth has won a Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Heuckeroth, a Washington University pediatric gastroenterologist who treats children with Hirschsprung disease and other gastrointestinal disorders at St. Louis Children's Hospital, was one of only four physician-scientists nationwide to receive the prestigious award.

Nutrients help reduce risk of birth defects
Some neural tube defects in mice linked to enzyme deficiency

2009 -- Women of childbearing age can reduce the risk of having a child born with a neural tube defect such as spina bifida by eating enough folate or folic acid. However, folate prevents only about 70 percent of these defects. New research using mice at the School of Medicine confirms the importance of another nutrient, inositol, to protect against the development of neural tube defects.

Life lessons from an asthma coach
Asthma coaching can reduce hospitalizations in some children

2009 -- Working with an asthma coach helps to significantly reduce hospitalizations of low-income, African-American children with asthma, results of a new, two-year study show. Researchers at the School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill worked with nearly 200 parents of children between 2-8 years old on Medicaid who had been hospitalized for asthma at St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Personalized asthma care
Children's characteristics may determine response to asthma drug
May 4,
2009 -- Certain characteristics of preschool-aged children at high risk for asthma could help physicians deliver more personalized and effective treatment. Researchers at the School of Medicine and five other sites nationwide found that children who showed the most improvement in days without wheezing using an inhaled corticosteroid drug were caucasian boys who had allergies and had a hospitalization or emergency department visit for asthma symptoms in the year prior to the trial.

Diagnosing autism spectrum disorders
Research shows wide age gap between possible and actual autism diagnosis

2009 -- "Timely identification and diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can impact a child's development and is the key to opening the door to the services and therapies available to children with autism," says Paul Shattuck, Ph.D., assistant professor at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. "Unfortunately, our research shows that the average age of autism diagnosis is nearly six years old, which is three to four years after diagnosis is possible." Shattuck is the lead author of an article on the timing of ASD identification in the current issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Video available

Gene's link to cancer revealed
Genetic source of rare childhood cancer found; gene is implicated in other cancers

2009 -- The search for the cause of an inherited form of a rare, aggressive childhood lung cancer has uncovered important information about how the cancer develops and potentially sheds light on the development of other cancers. The finding by researchers at the School of Medicine and other collaborating institutions adds the final link to the chain connecting the gene DICER1to cancer development.
