Expertise: Tumor immunology; immune system/response

Bio: Our research is aimed at elucidating the molecular cell biology of cytokine receptor signaling and in defining the effects of signaling dysfunction on tumor development. Towards these ends, we are studying the receptors for interferon-gamma (IFNg) and interleukin-10 (IL-10), two related yet distinct receptors and that regulate both the innate and adaptive limbs of the immune response, often in opposite directions. We continue our long standing analysis of IFNg receptor signaling, we have initiated a similar series of analyses on the IL-10 receptor, and we are assessing the role of the IFNg receptor and its signaling systems in the development of protective host anti-tumor responses.

Immune system can drive cancers into dormant state

Nov. 18, 2007 -- A multinational team of researchers has shown for the first time that the immune system can stop the growth of a cancerous tumor without actually killing it. Scientists have been working for years to use the immune system to eradicate cancers, a technique known as immunotherapy. The new findings prove an alternate to this approach exists: When the cancer can't be killed with immune attacks, it may be possible to find ways to use the immune system to contain it.
