Additional Background: Richard H. Gelberman, M.D., is the Fred C. Reynolds Professor and head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a world leader in hand and wrist microsurgery, having successfully treated hand and wrist injuries in patients from N.F.L. quarterbacks to symphony musicians to clerical workers suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. A former president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the author of more than 200 scientific manuscripts, he also has received numerous awards for his research.

That research focuses primarily on dense regular connective tissue: the ligaments, tendons and musles that allow us to function. He has received NIH support for that research since 1976, and his research interests include fractures of the radius -- the bone that runs along the inside of the arm from the wrist to the elbow -- as well as carpal instability, tendon healing and nerve injury. With a great deal of experience in the treatment of nerve injuries, he sees not only patients with nerve damage in the wrist and hand but also treats those with damage to nerves throughout the body.

He came to Washington University School of Medicine in 1995 as the first head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Prior to his arrival in St. Louis, Gelberman had been a professor of orthopaedic surgery at Harvard University Medical School in Boston and chief of the Hand Surgery Service at Massachusetts General Hospital.
