Bio: A cervical spine specialist, K. Daniel Riew, M.D. performs between 250 and 300 cervical spine operations each year. The Professor of Orthopedic and Neurological surgery also studies the use of synthetic, cervical discs as a potential alternative to spinal fusion surgery. He is included in the Best Doctors in America and America's Top Doctors lists. He is also listed in the following Who's Who lists: in America; in the World, and in Medicine and Healthcare.

Washington University Orthopedics participating in NFL spine treatment program

The National Football League has announced a new spine treatment program for retired players, and orthopedics specialists at the School of Medicine have been chosen to participate. K. Daniel Riew, the Mildred B. Simon Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and chief of the cervical spine service for Washington University Orthopedics, is one of five U.S. spine specialists selected to participate in the new NFL program.


Artificial alternative to spinal fusion

Feb. 26, 2009 -- Spine surgeons at theSchool of Medicine and other U.S. centers are reporting that artificial disc replacement works as well and often better than spinal fusion surgery. The two procedures are performed on patients with damaged discs in the neck.

WUSM physician provides new outlook to muscular dystrophy patient

Sept. 2, 2005 -- Some cases of muscular dystrophy are so severe many doctors won't even attempt to perform surgery on the patient. Aaron Dopf, needing a nearly 60 degree realignment of his neck, was one of those patients. He turned to WUSM orthopaedic surgeon Dan Riew, who successfully changed the way Dopf sees the world. He also is a professof of neurological surgery. In addition to his clinical work as a cervical spine surgeon, Riew studies studies the use of synthetic, cervical discs as a potential alternative to spinal fusion surgery in patients with degenerative disc disease.

Before he came to Washington University in 1995, Riew was trained both in internal medicine and in orthopaedic surgery. After completing a medical degree in 1984, he became an internal medicine resident at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and did not begin his residency in orthopaedic surgery until 1990 when he trained at George Washington University Hospital. Riew also completed fellowship training in congestive heart failure research at Cornell Medical Center, biomechanics research at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, and spine surgery at Case Western Reserve University. He trained under Henry Bohlman, M.D., who has trained more academic spine surgeons than any other surgeon in the world.
