Linda Cottler, professor of epidemiology in psychiatry at the School of Medicine, has been named president-elect of the American Psychopathological Association (APPA). She will serve as its president in 2010, the organization's centennial year.

Additional Background: Linda B. Cottler, Ph.D., is a professor of epidemiology in the Department of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine and director of the Epidemiology and Prevention Research Group at the university. Her research concentrates on methods in psychiatric epidemiologic research with a particular emphasis on substance abuse and dependence on drugs and alcohol. Her research targets high risk women in particular, and she also is involved in HIV prevention research. Specifically, Cottler has studied and assessed the relationship between substance use and psychiatric disorders, the public health consequences of substance use (including the link between HIV infection and substance use), peer-delivered prevention models to reduce HIV and substance abuse, and high risk behaviors among women.
Cottler also has served on a National Academy of Sciences panel to study the Social and Economic Impact of Pathological Gambling. Currently, she serves on a NAS panel to research data on Firearm Injuries. She and her team also are studying the use and abuse of club drugs such as ecstasy in Sydney, Miami and St. Louis.
