Chief of the Division of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Stem Cell Biology

Expertise: bone marrow transplantation, leukemia/lymphoma, stem cell transplantation, graft vs. host disease

Bio: DiPersio helped pioneer stem cell transplants and now focuses his research efforts on improving the success of bone marrow and stem cell transplants for the treatment of cancer and disorders of the blood. He is investigating the use of gene therapy to control graft versus host disease that is a main obstacle to sucessful bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. He is also studying the genetic events associated with relapse in acute myelogenouse leukemia as well as innovations in supportive care of leukemia and transplant patients.

Nov. 8, 2007 -- An innovative cancer imaging center at the School of Medicine has received a five-year, $10 million grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The grant will fund a second cycle of research at the Washington University Molecular Imaging Center, where scientists from many different specialties collaborate on advanced imaging projects.


New director

Aug. 23, 2006 -- Peter Westervelt, M.D., Ph.D., has been named director of the bone marrow transplantation and leukemia section of the Division of Oncology at the School of Medicine. Westervelt, associate professor of medicine, succeeds John F. DiPersio, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine, in the position.

For the past 12 years, WUSM physician John DiPersio and his colleagues at the Siteman Cancer Center have traveled en masse to Jefferson City in an effort to lobby the Missouri legislature about expanding medical coverage for cancer patients. After more than a decade, DiPersio says, "I'm delighted to say we've finally succeeded."
